Today, we use technology in the classroom for many purposes such as accessing textbooks, finding worksheets, and using it as a communication system with students and parents. Our society has influenced us to use technology with almost everything we do because it makes things easier on both the teachers and students ends. It helps teachers create powerpoints to present during class which is easier on them instead of having to write it all out during class and wasting time. It allows students to access those powerpoints and use them for studying in the future. So, there are a lot of influencers when it comes to technology in the classroom because it is used so many different ways.

The ISTE standards are important for educators to follow because it exemplifies the qualities a teacher should follow. Some of the qualities I never thought of including but realized how important they were to include. One that I never thought about and am unfamiliar with using is the analyst quality. It is useful to include data from the class for future purposes such as ways to improve. One quality that is meaningful to me is the collaborator because it is important to communicate with your colleagues and students in order to create relationships with them and it is a good way to learn from each other.

I think digital native is a perfect term to describe our generation because we were raised with the growing technology. We have grown up knowing how to use a flip phone to knowing everything there is to know on a smart-phone. I think it has made us better understand how to use all other types of technology such as smart boards in school and computers. You can tell there is a huge difference between our teachers and us because of our digital capabilities. It is almost given that the older the teachers are, the less technologically advanced they are. It isn't always true but most of the time it is. Our teachers are slower on the computers than us and take longer to understand how to use it. I have been in a lot of situations especially in high school where my teachers have asked the students how to do something technology related in the classroom because they couldn't figure it out. In the future, I am sure my students will become more technologically advanced because they have really grown up being a digital native so they will probably be quicker and more aware of the new advancements compared to me when I become a teacher.

I commented on Malyce's second blog because I think her blog post was interesting to read because we had similar opinions on some things but much different on others. I definitely saw her view from her standpoint after reading her blog. I commented on Hayley's second blog where I realized we had similar views on this topic.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your post. I strongly agree with all of your subject areas, and appreciated that you included the aspect of communicating with not only students but parents through technology. This is something I did not realize on my own, but definitely applies. I also found that we have very similar views on the aspect of a digital native and how our teachers having less understanding of technology has impacted our studies. Overall, I really enjoyed your post!

  2. While reading your post you brought up many good ways in which technology is helpful in the classroom, I never thought about how it also benefits students outside of the classroom for studying reasons. I also agree with you that the ISTE standards are important and the ones you chose to talk about were interesting to read your perspective on because I did not pick either of those! You made a great point about how teachers need to collaborate and how technology can help achieve this goal. Not only can technology help achieve this goal but it can almost make it easier to establish a healthy and collaborative relationship with a teacher and student (take this class for example, being able to email our professor with questions and work together about any misconceptions that we may come across).

  3. Your post is super similar to mine except in the topic of digital natives. I personally think that teachers are equally as advanced considering they almost have to be! Regardless, your ISTE standard choices reminded me of when we took EDF1005 together and discussed high-leverage practices. It's really interesting to see how our classes overlap and correlate with one another. Great post!

  4. it is interesting to me that you struggle with the analyst aspect of the ITSE, you explained it very well and I was impressed by that! I would love to hear more of your thoughts on the difference between us and our teachers regarding technology as I found your thoughts on it unique! I also loved your emphasis on collaboration, you brought up a very good point! overall great post Olivia! I look forward to reading more :)

  5. Olivia,

I thought the communicator standard was an important one too because this is centered around our learning and how we learn through our teachers. I really liked how you thought about how adapting from flip phones to smart phones has helped us figure out technology we use in school that we may not have been familiar with. I have never thought about it in that way, but that is a very good point. I also included in my blog post how my future students will be even more familiar with technology, as they have grown up in a more technologically centered world than I did.
